HIDE FULL ITINERARY

Day 1 UK/Rome

Depart on your flight to Rome. On arrival you'll transfer to your hotel in Spoleto, a pretty hill town in central Italy's Umbria region.

Day 2 Perugia

After breakfast our included tour takes you to Perugia, Umbria's capital. In the company of a Local Guide, wander the maze of cobbled streets in its beautiful historic centre to discover piazzas framed by fine mansions and a host of Etruscan and Roman monuments. You'll also visit Studio Moretti Caselli, a stained glass workshop founded in 1860 which is now a fascinating museum.

Day 3 Assisi

A Local Guide will introduce you to the highlights of Assisi, best known as the birthplace of St Francis of Assisi, patron saint of Italy. This medieval hill town is filled with churches, monasteries and shrines and you'll visit the grandest, the 13th century cathedral, built to honour the humble saint who lies in the crypt. Other highlights include the Rocca Maggiore castle.

Day 4 Spello & Foligno

Why not join our full-day optional excursion, which begins with a visit  to medieval Spello, where you can enjoy some time at leisure. The town is entered via three well-preserved Roman stone arches, and as you stroll around its cobblestone streets you can admire stone houses and peer into mysterious alleyways.
In the afternoon your tour continues with a guided tour of Foligno, where highlights include the 14th century Trinci Palace and a Romanesque cathedral. You'll also view the unique 'Calamita Cosmica', a huge sculpture of a skeleton with a long, pointy nose. This work of art was toured around Europe for many years and is now housed in a former church here.

Day 5 Lake Trasimeno

Today we include a cruise on Lake Trasimeno. Starting from Castiglione del Lago, located on a limestone promontory above the ruins of several Etruscan tombs, you'll cruise to Isola Maggiore. Step ashore to discover a charming fishing village, with houses dating back to the 15th century, and a lace museum.
Later you'll visit an organic farm, which is supported by the Travelsphere Cares project. The farm works closely with the local community, in particular children, teaching them about the importance of healthy eating. Here you'll learn about organic farming methods and take a tour of the farm.

Day 6 Narni & Ferentillo

Today is free for you to spend at leisure. Otherwise you can join our optional tour. We will start exploring one of the most fascinating cities of Umbria, Narni, and its unique underground area, including a convent, church and a Roman complex. The town is also famous for its art, architecture and cuisine, and you'll enjoy a tasting of local delicacies here. Your tour continues to the village of Ferentillo, where you'll visit the Church of Santo Stefano. Its crypt has a spooky surprise – a display of mummified bodies, which, in some cases, have hair, teeth and clothes.

Day 7 Gubbio & Grotte di Frasassi

We've left today free for you to explore at your own pace. Alternatively, join our optional excursion to Gubbio, where a Local Guide will introduce you to highlights including Gothic and Renaissance monuments. Just outside the town is a Roman amphitheatre and you'll also visit the magical Grotte di Frasassi caves complex.

Day 8 Rome/UK

You'll transfer to the airport for your flight back to the UK today.

Admire the splendid architecture or just sit and watch the world go by in Piazza IV Novembre, one of my favourite spots in Perugia.

Umbria - Italy's Spiritual Heart

Travelsphere Cares

Travelsphere Cares

We’re proud to work with an organic farm in Umbria who support disadvantaged children and help young people rebuild their lives through farming.

Through teaching the children agricultural techniques, the farm helps provide young people with a better start to their working life. They provide personalised education plans where children learn about and participate in hands on seasonal farming activities from sowing to harvesting, as well as caring for bees and gathering honey.

When their training is complete, young adults are given the chance to work at the farm on a permanent contract. As the organic farm has a specific interest in ancient grains, a particular focus is flour and bread making. When you visit the farm on the Umbria - Italy’s Spiritual Heart tour, you’ll learn about how the farm use traditional techniques rather than refined grains. Since the Second World War and the increase in popularity of pasta and bread, harvesting methods have changed over the years with a focus on refined grains. The organic farm celebrate a return to high quality heritage seeds for health benefits and all-natural farming techniques, such as allowing the wheat to dry outdoors without the use of pesticides.

At least once a month, the farm provides school canteens around the Umbria area with organic produce and they organise lessons about the benefits of healthy eating and organic farming. They are implementing baking workshops for the children in the future – so every time you book our Umbria tour, you’re financially supportintheir projects and improving vulnerable young lives.

Grotte di Frassasi

About the caves

As an Optional excursion on this tour, there is the chance to see the magical Frassasi Caves. The Frassasi Caves, or known as the ‘Grotte di Frassasi’ is a magical underground complex with the Marche region section of the Apennines. It is considered one of the world’s most magnificent, fascinating passageways within a preserved and uncontaminated environment.

On September 27th, 1971 the Marche region Speleology group officially identified the presence of the caves, naming them the ‘Big Cave of the Wind’. Just a few months earlier the natural opening was discovered from a tiny hole for which an air current was blowing. They began opening a small passage just 80 metres wide, when finally the main atrium of the cave was discovered ‘the Abyss’.

The caves are formed of a kingdom of stalagmites and stalactites which are formed from tiny droplets of sulphur rich water. As the water drips and drops they form beautiful formations which have stood for millions of years, and will continue to stand for many more.

The visit

As you walk down a long tunnel through temperature controlled gates, the anticipation starts to build. When you hear the word cave, you may initially think of dark stone caverns…

As the tunnel comes to an end, it opens up into a huge glorious cave with towering, glistening formations. Towering high up above, under the walkways and on the walls stand more glittering formations. As you walk slowly around trying to absorb the beauty, you can hear droplets tapping away, adding carefully to the existing architecture.

It is cool and quiet, and the gentle light just adds to the mystery of the caves. The formations look like wax, satin and silk! You are not allowed to touch the formations, which is why they are so untouched, not interrupted by humanity. It is a truly magical experience, like nothing I have seen before as you walk along the built walk ways the caves continue to unfold, more fairy-tale formations in each and every corner.
