Tokyo, the epitome of modern Japan, is home to over 13 million people. Futuristic skyscrapers, dazzling neon lights and designer shopping centres dominate the landscape, and a visit to the iconic Tokyo Tower is a real highlight.
Japan’s famous bullet trains will whisk you around the country at speeds of up to 199 mph and as you gaze out of the window, you’ll enjoy ever-changing views of the fabulous Japanese landscape. Boasting modern amenities and spacious, forward-facing seats, these trains are also punctual (the average delay is just 10 seconds) and super-efficient.
In stark contrast to the modern technology and hustle and bustle of Tokyo, Japan’s array of peaceful temples and famous ancient traditions are a delight to discover. Some of our favourite landmarks are in Kyoto, and include the beautiful Kiyomizu Temple with its large wooden veranda protruding over the hillside, and the spectacular Golden Pavilion one of the beauties of the World. Overlooking a large pond, the top two floors of this Zen-Buddhist temple are completely covered in shimmering gold leaf.
For many, the essence of Japanese culture is captured in familiar images of the geisha, elegantly dressed in kimonos, with white-painted faces and traditional hairstyles. Professionally trained in Japanese arts such as dance and music, the geisha entertain guests during banquets and other occasions. A custom still very much alive today, one of the best places to uncover more about the world of the geisha is in the Gion area of Kyoto.
And of course, no visit to Japan would be complete without the chance to experience an authentic tea ceremony. Influenced by Zen Buddhism, ceremonies take place in peaceful and relaxing surroundings and involve the ritual of mixing hot water and powdered green tea with a bamboo whisk, before serving it to guests one by one.
