Colin and Daphne set off on Travelsphere’s Best of the Deep South tour and chose the special departure to experience Mardi Gras in New Orlean, which made their journey truly remarkable. What follows is a 12-day immersion into America’s musical heritage, brought to life through their own words and experiences.
There are some journeys that stay with you long after you return home and a tour through America’s Deep South is undoubtedly one of them. From the rhythm-filled streets of New Orleans to the musical heartlands of Nashville and Memphis, this 12-day adventure offers far more than sightseeing. It’s an immersive dive into history, culture, and the soundtrack of a nation.
A Journey Built on Connection
Travelling as part of a group quickly became one of the highlights. With around 20 fellow travellers, the atmosphere was warm, friendly and effortlessly social. Bonds formed easily so much so that many of us have stayed in touch, even after the trip ended. Shared experiences, from long coach rides to unforgettable evenings of live music, created a genuine sense of camaraderie.
At the heart of the journey was our exceptional tour director Jackie, whose knowledge and energy elevated every stop. From seamless organisation to fascinating insights you wouldn’t find in a guidebook, her presence turned a great trip into an exceptional one.
Music at Every Turn
The Deep South doesn’t just celebrate music; it lives and breathes it.
In Nashville, our visit to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum and RCA Studio B felt like stepping into the soul of American music. Surrounded by handwritten lyrics, iconic costumes and legendary recordings, the experience brought the genre’s history vividly to life complete with the unmistakable presence of Elvis Presley.
Memphis offered a powerful blend of music and history. From the legendary Sun Studio where Elvis first recorded to the moving National Civil Rights Museum, the city leaves a lasting impression. A visit to Graceland was a standout moment for us, offering an intimate look into Elvis’s life, legacy, and global impact through an extensive collection of memorabilia including costumes, guitars, instruments, cars and personal items.
One of the most poignant experiences came from visiting the B.B. King Museum in Indianola. Tucked away from the main tourist trail, the museum tells the emotional story of B. B. King from his childhood in the Mississippi Delta to international stardom. It’s a reminder that behind every legend is a journey shaped by hardship, resilience and determination.
Equally inspiring was the visit to the Stax Museum of American Soul Music, where music’s power to bring communities together was on full display. As part of a community initiative, young local musicians performed, showcasing not only talent but the transformative role music plays in shaping futures.
