Depart on your scheduled flight to Genoa today. On arrival you’ll transfer to your hotel in Santa Margherita Ligure, located between Portofino and Rapallo, for your seven-night stay. Relax before enjoying dinner here this evening.
After breakfast join us on our included three-quarter-day tour to Portofino, which we reach by local boat service along a pretty coastal stretch. What used to be a tiny fishing port is today the Italian Riviera’s most exclusive resort offering designer boutiques and a fine selection of cafés and bars. Take a stroll among its snaking streets to the Church of St Giorgio, which is a short distance from the harbour. From here the views across the bay are quite spectacular.
Spend today at leisure in the beautiful seaside town of Santa Margherita Ligure. Although relatively unknown, the town is teeming with character. Its harbour, which hosts a morning fish market, is a magnet for small yachts - you won’t tire of strolling around this picture-postcard setting. Why not treat yourself to a fabulous seafood lunch in one of the restaurants here.
Today’s included full-day excursion by train, takes you to the enchanting area known as the Cinque Terre. This translates as Five Lands and refers to the five villages which perch precariously on the cliffs high above the Mediterranean Sea and are almost all inaccessible by road. As you explore you’ll discover that each village has its own unique character. You’ll also enjoy stunning views of the sea and the coastline.
Spend today at leisure or why not join our full-day excursion by coach, which takes you firstly to Pisa where you will see the famous Leaning Tower. One of four buildings which make up the cathedral complex and what is known as the Field of Miracles, the tower took 176 years to complete and began to lean shortly after construction. After admiring this world-famous landmark you’ll continue to Lucca, which boasts some of Italy’s finest examples of medieval and Renaissance architecture and is said to be one of Tuscany’s best kept secrets. The town is also famous as the birthplace of the composer Puccini and as the home of the Volto Santo relic which is kept in its beautiful cathedral.
Enjoy breakfast this morning before our included three-quarter-day excursion by train to the enchanting town of Sestri Levante. Famous children’s author Hans Christian Andersen was so charmed by the area he made it his home and during his time here he gave the town’s two bays their names – the Bay of Fables (Baia delle Favole) and the Bay of Silence (Baia de Silenzio). As you explore at your own pace you’re sure to be charmed by this picturesque town too. Admire the historic villas of the old town and venture into one of the charismatic cafés of the new town where you can relax and enjoy a bite to eat before you return to your hotel.
Enjoy some free time in Santa Margherita Ligure. You could explore the surrounding area, spend a lazy day on the beach or mix with the locals in one of the many welcoming cafés and restaurants. Alternatively, why not join our optional excursion to the beautiful village of Portovenere and the picturesque harbour town of Lerici. This evening you’ll dine in a local restaurant.
After breakfast you’ll transfer to the airport for your flight back to the UK.

Please note: The holiday includes walking in areas with rough ground, gradients and steps.

Experience even more of your destination by adding one or more optional excursions to your holiday before you set off. Right now is the perfect opportunity to do that – with everything booked and paid for you’ll have even more to get excited about and all you’ll need to think about while you’re away is having a great time.

Lerici and Portovenere

Lerici and Portovenere

from £64

Enjoy a full day excursion in the company of a local guide. We start the day by following the coast to Portovenere which is a delightful little port on the Ligurian coast with its colourful medieval houses and sea-front fortress. You will have free time to explore this most romantic village with its pastel painted houses that cluster around the harbour or you can wander along the pretty waterfront promenade, with nearby Byron’s Grotto an inspirational spot for the famous poet.
Our next stop is the town Lerici which is located in the glorious Bay of La Spezia, famous for its natural beauty. This picturesque village dates back to medieval times when, under the rule of Pisa, it fought cross-bay battles with Genovese Portovenere as well as with local pirates. The town is set on a magnificent coastline of grey cliffs jutting down into a crystal-clear sea and surrounded by a national park that is nearly an unframed painting of pine forests, olive trees, and tiny colourful hamlets. The waterfront piazza is filled with trompe-l'oeil frescoed buildings and seaside cafés where you can sit and admire the charming harbour.
