Tour Overview

Enjoy the best of both worlds on a holiday which begins in Selous, Tanzania, one of the largest and most important game reserves in Africa. Your lodge offers fabulous views over the surrounding area and has a tree house overlooking a watering hole. Head out in search of wildlife on an early morning walking safari, a boat safari and several game drives. Keep your eyes peeled and you might be lucky enough to see an array of different species, including the 'Big Five' – lion, elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard and rhino. After notching up plenty of wildlife spots, fly to the idyllic island of Zanzibar in the Indian Ocean. Here you'll enjoy a visit to Stone Town, the island's main city, which has changed little over the last 200 years. You'll also have plenty of time to relax and soak up the sun on one of the island's stunning sandy beaches.

Depart on your overnight flights to Dar es Salaam via Nairobi.

Day 2 Dar es Salaam - Selous

On arrival in Dar es Salaam there's another short flight to Selous, one of the largest and most important game reserves in Africa. You'll be met at the airstrip by your Local Guide and transferred to your lodge, where you will stay for four nights. You'll be welcomed with a drink and then introduced to your exciting surroundings.
After you've settled into your room, make your way to the restaurant for an included lunch. Then the rest of the day is yours to spend as you wish, with an afternoon lazing around the lodge's facilities.

Meals included: L,D

Day 3 Selous

There's an early but exciting start to your day as you take a walking safari in the area around your lodge. With your Local Guide you will head through open woodland and lush forest, using hides along the way to spot wildlife.
We'll be back at the lodge for breakfast and there's time to relax before heading out mid-afternoon on your first safari in Selous Game Reserve. At 56,000 square kilometres, it's roughly the size of Ireland and home to a rich variety of wildlife including one of Africa's largest populations of elephants. There are also some 150,000 buffalo, 40,000 hippos, 1,500 African hunting dogs, 4,000 lions and a vast population of antelope. Birds are also in abundance here, with more than 440 species recorded at the last count. As the reserve is so huge, you're unlikely to see many people during your game drive. However, you should tick many animals off your list, including the 'Big Five' – lion, elephant, Cape buffalo, leopard and rhino.
Back at your lodge, a wonderful evening awaits as you are invited to enjoy a traditional Swahili buffet under the stars. As you tuck into the delicious dishes, which blend African, Indian and Arabic flavours, your chef will tell you about the ingredients used.

Meals included: B,L,D

Day 4 Selous

We're going to leave the lodge early again today, enjoying a game drive as we journey through the reserve to Lake Tagalala for a boat safari. The lake is famed for its huge numbers of resident crocodiles, and your packed breakfast should keep you going as you notch up plenty of wildlife spots. Plenty of rare birds can be seen here too, including the African skimmer and the only recorded Humblots heron on the African mainland.

We'll enjoy a game drive as we head through the reserve back to the lodge, where a late lunch will be waiting for us.

Meals included: B,L,D

Day 5 Selous - at Leisure

After a couple of early starts, you may choose to spend today lazing at the lodge. However, if you want to see more wildlife, you can head off on an optional full-day or half-day game drive.

Meals included: B,L,D

Day 6 Selous - Nungwi

We're flying to Zanzibar today, to enjoy five nights on this idyllic island lying off Tanzania's coast. Thanks to its tropical climate, all sorts of spices are grown here, earning it the name of 'Spice Island'. En route to our base in Nungwi, we'll stop at a spice plantation for a fascinating tour.

Meals included: B,D

Day 7 Nungwi - at Leisure

If you want to enjoy some 'me' time, you have come to the right place! Perhaps you'll soak up the sun on the white-sand beach or as you lounge around the swimming pool. Either way, gorgeous views of the azure waters of the Indian Ocean are all yours.

Meals included: B,D

Day 8 Nungwi

Today we're heading off to Stone Town, where a guided walking tour will introduce you to a place that has changed little over the last 200 years. In Zanzibar's main city, you'll discover winding alleyways, bustling bazaars, mosques, palaces and extravagant dwellings adorned with brass-studded wooden doors. Your guide will also tell you about Zanzibar's history and how it was once at the centre of the African slave trade.

Meals included: B,D

Day 9 Nungwi - at Leisure

There's more time today to enjoy your surroundings and soak up the sun. The beautiful beach and the warm waters of the Indian Ocean are close by, so perhaps grab a snorkel and explore underwater.

Meals included: B,D

Day 10 Nungwi - at Leisure

The beach, the swimming pool or a walk into the village – where you spend the last day of your holiday is entirely up to you.

  1. Favourite Moment

Selous Game Reserve is one of the best places to see endangered African hunting dogs. It's a privilege to see them in the wild.

Sable Mountain Lodge

Sable Mountain Lodge is small, intimate and very friendly. It is located on a small hill right on the North West boundary of the Selous Game Reserve, a World Heritage Site which at 56,000 square kilometres is the second largest protected area in the world. The lodge is made up of 4 stone cottages and open-fronted tented rooms. Guests can enjoy a sun downer drink before dinner in the wonderfully quirky “Landrover’s Return” pub before heading to a small & intimate restaurant. After safaris in the heat of the day, enjoy the cool freshwater swimming pool and sunbathing terrace. Early mornings or late afternoons at the lodge can be spent at Sable’s tree house watching animals drink at a nearby waterhole.

The Zanzibari

The Zanzibari is situated at the Northern side of Zanzibar, about a 10 minute walking distance from Nungwi Town. Set above the beach on a low coral cliff with easy access to the sea, you are offered privacy, peace and tranquillity while taking in the stunning views of the Indian Ocean. There are two dining options on site and swimming pool. Rooms are spacious and feature air conditioning, fridge, tea & coffee making facilities and outside seating. The restaurant and the suites are furnished with dhow’s furniture, beds are very comfortable and the bathrooms fully functional.
