What’s hot in Europe - The best destinations to discover this summer

Turkish delights

Turkey dazzles your senses, from Istanbul’s bustling Grand Bazaar with scents of spices to the incredible sights of the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque – not to mention the delicious cuisine. Discover richly historical sites, such as the legendary city of Troy, the ancient city of Pergamon and the Greek city of Ephesus, home to one of the ancient wonders of the world. Soak up culture and tradition with belly dancing and the heady scent of Turkish coffee, travel along the Mediterranean coast past sparkling lakes and through sweeping valleys, and visit the incredible cave dwellings of Cappadocia, as you embark on an intoxicating journey across this incredible land.

The Oberammergau Passion Play

The Oberammergau Passion Play is only performed every 10 years, and 2020 is your chance to experience it. In 1633, the small Bavarian community of Oberammergau had endured months of the plague. The villagers who survived vowed to perform a play every 10 years about the suffering, death and resurrection of Christ, and it is a real spectacle to behold. This will be the 42nd year that the play has been performed, involving over 2,000 performers, musicians and stage technicians, all from the village. After enjoying this epic production, why not head further afield and discover the spectacular scenery in Austria. Explore the beautiful cities of Salzburg and St Georgen, and journey through Austria’s stunning Lake District.

A duo of Balkan beauties

Slovenia is among Europe’s best-kept secrets. Check out the beauty of Lake Bled, where you can cruise the emerald-green waters, before visiting the clifftop Bled Castle. Ljubljana, one of Europe’s oldest cities, features a grand castle, and the country’s stunning Postojna caves will transport you into an eerie underground world. Venture into neighbouring Croatia, where the pretty Adriatic fishing port of Rovinj and the lovely seaside resort of Opatija await. The UNESCO-listed Plitvice Lakes National Park is famed for its 16 lakes connected by cascading waterfalls. Take to the waters to admire the thundering falls and keep a lookout for an array of wildlife.

Try out Transylvania

For an atmospheric, Gothic adventure, Romania and Transylvania top the list. Walk the cobblestone lanes of medieval towns including Sibiu – where you can visit the intriguingly-named Liar’s Bridge – before heading into spectacular forested mountains to discover the 14th century Bran Castle. Also known as Dracula’s castle, stay on the trail of this legend with a visit to Sighisoara, where Vlad the Impaler was born, the supposed inspiration for Bram Stoker’s fictional count. You can also visit Peles Castle, one of Europe’s most stunning fairytale creations, and the UNESCO-listed church at Premjer, with its 40ft-high walls, erected to prevent attack.

Magical Malta

Variety is the spice of life and Malta, in the heart of the Mediterranean Sea, has it in spades. It boasts bronze-sand beaches and sweeping bays, yet it’s also a living museum. In Valletta, follow cobbled streets to the fortress overlooking the Grand Harbour. And in the church-studded lanes of the Three Cities, built and fortified by the Knights of Malta, you’ll find history in every nook and cranny. Wonder at the dazzling Blue Grotto, or head off on a day trip to the island of Gozo. Malta has changed hands many times, and today its landscape, people and cuisine reflect its melting pot of cultures. Come and discover an archipelago where natural beauty, modern sophistication and ancient relics exist side by side.
