Itinerary

Fly to Winnipeg.

Located at the geographical centre of North America, Winnipeg has a memorable skyline and fascinating history. Our discoveries here start with a thrilling visit to the International Polar Bear Conservation Centre at Assiniboine Park. We will have the once-in-a-lifetime chance to watch rescued polar bears through underwater viewing tunnels and listen to a talk from one of the researchers about the connection between Churchill and the centre. After this we begin our tour of Winnipeg. Its colourful past is largely evident in the Forks area as well as downtown. Manitoba Legislative Building, made from fossil-rich Manitoba limestone and full of mysterious Masonic references, is an intriguing place to visit. Winnipeg’s French Quarter - home to a thriving Franco-Manitoban community, the St Boniface Cathedral and the Saint- Boniface Museum - is also fascinating. Here you will also learn about Louis Riel, the founding father of Manitoba.
Relax over lunch in a local restaurant in the French Quarter. A stroll around Leo Mol Sculpture Garden in Assiniboine Park is a welcome way to walk off your meal before our flight to Churchill In the north of Canada, Churchill is the perfect place from which to discover the charms of this remote region. We’ll stay in the Lazy Bear Lodge - a rustic, family-run log building which makes a cosy base from which to explore. Our welcome dinner - an ‘Arctic Feast’ – will be served at the lodge this evening. You’ll enjoy an authentic experience as you sip an Arctic Spritzer drink, followed by traditional local dishes such as char, caribou and musk ox.

The best way to get close to the wildlife here, especially the polar bears, is aboard a unique tundra vehicle. These all terrain buggies are designed especially to minimise the impact on the environment and animals while still offering visitors the perfect opportunity to admire the wildlife. You’ll have lots of opportunity to capture images from the tundra as the team of tour leaders and adventurers that host your expedition are skilled at finding the best opportunities. Enjoying a hearty lunch out in the wilderness, aboard the tundra, is another great experience of this memorable day.

In the evening we will have the opportunity to hear about Churchill and its changing landscape throughout the year and also learn about the history of Lazy Bear Lodge.

At the Polar Bear Jail polar bears that stray too close to the town are humanely captured and put into ‘jail’ until they can be safely released back into their own environment. It’s an intriguing system to learn about. You’ll have the opportunity to visit the jail this morning on our tour of Churchill. Set in an idyllic location overlooking the water is Cape Merry a site of great historic importance. We will visit the battery of Cape Merry before heading back into the town to explore the interesting Eskimo Museum.

Churchill has much to offer including the Canada Park exhibit at the train station and the unique shops that line the streets in town. You can explore at leisure this afternoon.

This evening we will gather to embark upon our dog sledding tour. Meet the sled dogs and musher and learn about the history of dog sledding in Northern Canada before sitting aboard your sled (or perhaps a cart if the snow is light) for a memorable ride through the picturesque trails of Joe Bach’s Ridge. After your exhilarating experience enjoy tea and fresh bannock, a tasty local specialty; it’s a great way to round off a thoroughly enjoyable evening.

The wildlife here is so breathtaking that you will want as many opportunities as possible to experience it. Spend a second day out on the tundra today as we head off on another great expedition to seek out the wildlife and hopefully spot more polar bears.

We will gather with the group in the evening to enjoy our farewell dinner. Fly to Winnipeg this evening.

The Forks area of Winnipeg is a delightful area to explore and is hugely popular with locals and visitors alike. Overflowing with history, tempting restaurants and shops it’s an enjoyable area in which to while away the hours.

Fly to the UK on the evening of day 6, arriving on day 7.

Lazy Bear Lodge

Few people know about the wonders of Churchill, Manitoba and even fewer have had the pleasure of visiting. But those who have made the journey have experienced a world virtually untouched by human hands.

Whether you explore the lush boreal forest and its wildlife, the rocky Hudson Bay coastline teaming with Beluga Whales, or come to visit the great Polar Bear, in Churchill you’ll find yourself in a clean, natural place that few see. We are accessible, but still out of the way.

The Lazy Bear Lodge – which feels more like an 1800’s trading post than a modern Eco-Lodge includes over 1000 hand-crafted logs, creating an assembly of twisted, and gnarled timbers from enduring trees huddled next to the great barren lands.

Construction started in 1995 when the temperature was hovering around -35 Celsius. This allowed the logs to be hauled mostly in winter time over snow by snowmobile and trailer roughly 20 miles northwest to Churchill. Since its completion in its present form in 2005, it remains the largest handcrafted log building in Manitoba.

The Lodge is furnished with comfortable hand-built log fittings, set awaiting the next expedition of tired and happy explorers in the unique dining room where indigenous foods such as Caribou Pepper Steak, Dill Crusted Arctic Char, and Muskox Rouladen grace the tables. The main entrees, made from scratch ingredients provides a culinary adventure each day.
