HIDE FULL ITINERARY

Day 1 UK/San Francisco

Today you'll depart on your scheduled flight to San Francisco. On arrival, we'll transfer you to your hotel where a two-night stay gives you plenty of time to get to know this exciting, cosmopolitan city.

Day 2 San Francisco

We'll explore San Francisco together, on a sightseeing tour which includes Fisherman's Wharf, the sharp hairpin turns of Lombard Street and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge. Once you have your bearings you can set your own pace this afternoon, perhaps take an optional bay cruise or a thrilling helicopter ride. Then, if you're still raring to go this evening, you can view the city by night on an optional tour.

Day 3 Eureka

Leaving the hills of San Francisco behind, we will journey across the Golden Gate Bridge and head northwards into California's scenic wine country.

Day 4 Grant’s Pass

As your journey continues to Oregon today, you're going to get the chance to explore Redwood National Park. The coast redwood is the tallest known plant species in the world, soaring to more than 350 feet tall, and living for an average of 600 years. Before arrival in Grant's Pass, another highlight of today is a visit to a winery for a tasting.

Day 5 Crater Lake

You're in for a scenic treat today as you visit Crater Lake. The area's violent volcanic past has given way to this tranquil, picturesque body of water which is renowned for its deep-blue colour. Surrounded by cliffs, it is America's deepest lake and is fed entirely by rain and snow.
Back at Grant's Pass, you can spend the rest of the day just as you wish.

Day 6 Newport

Today you'll travel to Newport, on the Oregon Coast, a place that seafood lovers will know as the 'Dungeness Crab Capital of the World'. You will stop at the ancient wooden Yaquina Bay Lighthouse on the way. Of course, a crabbing demonstration is included on arrival, as well as a guided stroll along fisherman's memorial walk.

Day 7 Newport

Enjoy a free day in Newport to spend as you please. This scenic city is home to two lighthouses, including the tallest in Oregon, and its beaches are a great place to head to look for whales and bald eagles. Be sure to admire the Yaquina Bay Bridge, the city's most iconic landmark, or maybe head to the Oregon Coast Aquarium. Here, exhibits range from three ocean habitats connected by a series of tunnels, to a touch pool, where you can enjoy a hands-on experience with anemones and crabs.

Day 8 Portland

We're heading to Portland today. We'll have an orientation tour here before arrival at our hotel in Troutdale.

Day 9 Seattle

You'll head to Seattle today, but not before the chance to discover the Columbia River Gorge and Hood River. The spot where the Columbia River carves a dramatic canyon between the states of Oregon and Washington offers breathtaking views. We'll also admire Mount Hood, the tallest peak in Oregon and view Mount St Helens. This active volcano, at 40,000 years old, is relatively young and offers a great photo opportunity.

Day 10 Seattle

A day to yourself gives you the opportunity to explore Seattle at your own pace. It's a city surrounded by stunning natural scenery and boasting an impressive skyline, and if you head to Kerry Park, your reward will be sensational views. Another great place to visit is the famous Pike Place Market, and if you want to stop for a coffee, the original branch of Starbucks is right here.
Alternatively, why not join our optional tour, which takes you to the 'Future of Flight Aviation Center & Boeing Tour'. This is one of Seattle's top attractions, giving you the chance to view 747, 767, 777 and 787 Dreamliners being assembled on the production line. You'll learn many fascinating facts here about Boeing and the planes that bear the aerospace giant's name.

Day 11 Seattle/UK

Enjoy your final morning at leisure before we transfer you to the airport for your overnight flight back to the UK.

Day 12 UK

Today you'll arrive back in the UK.

Please note that the itinerary for 2020 will differ slightly from that shown here. We have added a lunch in Newport on day 6. We will stay in the Red Lion Inn and Suites in Grants Pass, in Seattle we will stay in the Executive Hotel Pacific.

Crater Lake

Park Ranger Dave Grimes top-10 reasons why Crater Lake is special:

1 - From Tumult to Tranquility

The perfect lake emerged from a massive explosion less than 8000 years ago

2 - The Crater Lake Moss-ter!

Moss that begins growing 80 feet down and can climb 30 feet or more

3 - The Crater lake Monster!

Tiny flies that lay eggs on the surface, but live for three years as worms on the bottom of the lake before re-emerging to mate an die – and they don’t bite

4 - ‘Holey-Smokes’

The Pinnacles petrified smoke columns

5 - Rocks that Fly and Float

Pumice rock that was sprayed out during the eruption and will float on the lake surface when washed back by snowfall and storms

6 - Best Vanishing Act Ever

Mount Mazama simply blew its tops and collapsed resulting in the crater. Native American communities spoke of the event

7 - A Catastrophic Explosion

Ash from the eruption made its way to Europe!

8 - World’s Clearest Water

High altitude UV rays helps to purify the water and stop the growth of algae and bacteria

9 - Annual Snowfall

44 feet / 14 meters – melted snow gradually filled the lake since the eruption, and it has a natural over-flow valve!

10 - Deepest Lake in the USA

1943 feet – the 9th deepest Lake in the world

The Golden Gate Bridge

The story behind the Golden Gate Bridge

Every year more than 10 million visitors flock to see the Golden Gate Bridge, an iconic San Francisco landmark which opened in May 1937.

The bridge that could not and should not have been built

The Golden Gate Bridge Spanning the Golden Gate Strait, the idea for the 1.7-mile long bridge first came about in the second half of the 19th century. It was clear that easy access to the city of San Francisco would make the land to its north more valuable, but it wasn’t until the 1920s that plans for the bridge were seriously considered. Once described as ‘the bridge which could not and should not be built’, the project faced years of stiff opposition from those concerned about its cost, design, impact on the environment and threat to other operations in the harbour. Yet when construction finally began in January 1933, most of the $35m finance came from local citizens who put their own properties up as collateral.

An impressive safety record

During its four years of construction, workers battled against strong tides, storms and fog. Despite this, the bridge had a very impressive safety record – there were just 11 fatalities. It was the first site in America to enforce the wearing of hard hats, and safety nets were hung beneath it to protect anyone who fell. The nets saved the lives of 19 workers who became known as the ‘Halfway to Hell Club’.

2 billion vehicles have crossed it

When it opened, the Golden Gate Bridge was the longest suspension bridge in the world and almost 200,000 pedestrians crossed it on opening day. Since then, it’s estimated that more than two billion vehicles have journeyed over the bridge, and today visitors can even hop in a helicopter for the ride of their lives around, over and under it.

It was never meant to be orange

The vivid orange colour of the bridge was never meant to be permanent, it was actually the colour of the primer, but the architect preferred it to the usual black or grey. The bridge would have been painted in black and yellow stripes if the US Navy had their way, to make it visible in foggy conditions.
