HIDE FULL ITINERARY

DAY 1 UK/Montreal

Today you'll fly to Montreal. On arrival we will transfer you to your hotel for a two-night stay.

DAY 2 Quebec City

Spend today exploring Montreal at your leisure or enjoy an optional full-day tour of Quebec City. It stands on the mighty St Lawrence River, and we will see highlights including the picturesque Old Town, the Cathedral, Château Frontenac and the Plains of Abraham battle site. You'll also be able to admire views of the Laurentian Hills and Mont St-Anne from the Dufferin Terrace.

DAY 3 Montreal & Ottawa

Discover the highlights of Montreal on a sightseeing tour. Located in the French-speaking province of Quebec, Canada's second city boasts a wealth of 17th century buildings, beautiful gardens, bustling street markets and open-air cafés. It's most iconic site is probably the magnificent Notre-Dame Cathedral.Later we are going to head to the country's capital, Ottawa and get our bearings on a city tour. Highlights here include the National War Memorial, the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, Confederation Square, the grounds of Parliament Hill, the Rideau Canal and ByWard Market.

DAY 4 Kingston & Toronto

Today we will travel to Toronto. On the way we'll make a stop at the historic university town of Kingston. It is the gateway to the beautiful 1000 islands, a picturesque archipelago afloat in the St Lawrence River. An optional lunch cruise is a great way to admire their splendour.

DAY 5 Toronto

You're going to discover the best of Toronto on a short city tour. Once you have your bearings you will be keen to explore further and you can do so at leisure this afternoon. The city's skyline is dominated by the 1,815ft CN Tower and the views from the top are simply incredible.

DAY 6 Niagara Falls

Your day begins with a visit to Niagara-on-the-Lake, often described as Ontario's loveliest town. Then we're going to head to one of the greatest sights in the New World, the mighty Niagara Falls. You'll have plenty of time to explore and can choose how you want to view the thundering waters. One option is to take a boat ride, or perhaps you'll enjoy a unique view from below and behind, at the 'Journey Behind the Falls' attraction.

DAY 7 Banff

Today you're bound for Banff in the Rocky Mountains. We'll fly to Calgary and then continue our journey by road. We'll get our bearings on a short orientation tour when we arrive.

DAY 8 Banff

Stunning vistas appear at every turn in Banff National Park and you'll be keen to get out and explore. Snow-capped mountains, crystal-clear lakes, sparkling streams and swathes of forest are just some of the attractions, and the wildlife is equally as impressive. Look out for black and grizzly bears, wolves, elk and deer on land, then keep your eyes peeled for eagles, hawks and ospreys in the sky. There's plenty to see and do in Banff and lots of optional excursions to choose from. How about a cable car ride to the top of Sulphur Mountain or a helicopter flight over the Rockies.

DAY 9 Lake Louise

Today we are going to Lake Louise, a glacial, jade-green lake high in the mountains. It is surrounded on all sides by towering peaks and is described as one of Canada's most beautiful locations.

DAY 10 Kelowna

We'll travel through the Rockies, via Revelstoke and Vernon to Kelowna. Situated in the beautiful Okanagan Valley, this will be our base for the next two nights.

DAY 11 Kelowna

Our day begins with a visit to a vineyard and a chance to taste some Okanagan Valley wine. This afternoon is yours to relax at the hotel, or maybe explore more of Kelowna.

DAY 12 Victoria

Your journey continues with a drive along the Coquihalla Highway to Merritt and then down to the rich green valleys of the Fraser River Delta. Next we're going to catch a ferry to Vancouver Island and then travel by road to Victoria.

DAY 13 Victoria

We'll get to know Victoria on a sightseeing tour this morning. It is situated on Vancouver Island and resembles an old English town with narrow streets and grand 19th century buildings. We'll visit the famous Butchart Gardens and then this afternoon is yours to do as you please. An optional whale-watching excursion is a must for wildlife enthusiasts.

DAY 14 Vancouver

We'll return to the mainland by ferry and travel to the city of Vancouver. A sightseeing tour will introduce you to highlights including 'Gastown', Chinatown, Stanley Park and the harbour. Later we will transfer you to your hotel.

DAY 15 Vancouver

Spend some time exploring at leisure. There's plenty of sightseeing on offer and we recommend an optional excursion to Vancouver's Northshore. You'll see the spectacular Capilano Suspension Bridge and take the cable car up Grouse Mountain.

Enjoy a relaxing morning before we transfer you to the airport for your flight home.

Grand Tour of Canada: Celebrating the 150th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada

Travel Writer, Lynn Houghton, joined our Grand Tour of Canada in 2017 as the country prepared for its sesquicentennial celebrations. Read Lynn's blog to find out more...

Towering colourful carved totems stare down at us with bright vacant eyes as we gaze up from below. Totems, or story poles, are carved by First Nation peoples and tell tales of an ancient land full of wildlife, water, ice and snow. Eagles are prominent on totems as are toads, birds of prey and indigenous people. I spot a bald eagle circling overhead as we take in the mysticism and magic of this moment. With stunning views of the sparkling city of Vancouver just across the water from this very spot, I feel transported.

Modern day tourists may think Canada is all about maple syrup, ice hockey and mounted police but they are only scratching the surface of this magnificent and fascinating land.

Canada is the second largest country in the world and on a seventeen day trip, I only see a tiny fraction of its vast expanse. It is a place of superlatives: the biggest urban park in the world, some of the lowest recorded temperatures on record, borders three of the largest bodies of water in the world and, uniquely, in Collingswood, Ontario, the largest Elvis Impersonation Contest on the planet.

Vancouver is considered one of the healthiest places to live on the earth (another superlative). Sushi is hugely popular here with fresh fish readily accessible to most residents. Incredible markets such as the one on Granville Island have produce, top meat and charcuterie producers, bakeries, donut shops and much more. Tree filled parks and beach fronts as well as petite city spaces are filled with residents going for a jog, walking their dog or doing a morning workout.

But this is the end of our trip and it is the journey to get to Vancouver that is truly remarkable... travelling on the historic Rocky Mountaineer train from Banff. This iconic train is unique because, over the heads of passengers, are dome shaped glass roofs to optimise viewing.

The SilverLeaf service single-level dome coaches were built in Montreal in the 1950s and were fully remodelled in 2012, while the Rocky Mountaineer GoldLeaf bi-level dome coaches were custom-built by Colorado Railcar. The bi-level coaches have a dining area below and passenger level above, again with the shatterproof glass overhead dome.

Landscapes, wild animals, glaciers, mountains, lakes and tiny towns all wiz by on this journey to the ocean. The Rocky Mountaineer’s Mile Post Magazine, along with the hosts on board, broadcast information about the scenery we travel through and it is riveting stuff.

We pass Hell’s Gate Canyon, which was first seen by 19th century explorer, Simon Fraser. We learn about the last spike of the railway, which is an iron nail as opposed to the gold ones which were historically used and we see the marker for the Continental Divide not far from Lake Louise.

The first day of our two-day trip, we get into Kamloops quite late due to an earlier delay. But staff on board Rocky Mountaineer are so attentive and intuitive, they make sure everyone is offered supper so they can go straight to bed on reaching their hotel and not have to worry about going out for a meal.

The beginning of the tour is also remarkable as I have never been to Quebec. Visiting French speaking Canada is something I have been looking forward to with anticipation. Sadly, Montreal is in the grip of a cold snap when we arrive and so isn’t showing us her best side (except the Basilica of Notre Dame which is staggeringly beautiful). But nothing can dampen the trip the following day to Quebec City. The walled city is truly a surprise, particularly as it is the only fortress to survive intact in North America. But it is viewing the Fairmont Hotel Le Château de Frontenac perched aloft in the highest part of the city that takes my breath away. I am simply mesmerised by her beauty.

Early on, during a short tour, we hear about the battle on the Plains of Abraham (interesting as it sealed the fate of French Canada) and we also learn about the 150th anniversary of the confederacy which is being celebrated this summer. But what I enjoy the most about Quebec and Quebec City is hearing French being spoken and enjoying the French sense of style that has infiltrated this part of the world. I even try a dish called Poutine but discover that, as it is cheesy chips with gravy, it is more a British dish with a French moniker.

As celebrations get into full swing for the anniversary, this is a perfect time to visit Canada. But if you don’t make it this summer, not to worry, as there is ample time to make plans for next year.
