Your Itinerary

HIDE FULL ITINERARY

DAY 1 UK/Lima via Bogotá

Depart on your scheduled flight to Lima via Bogotá . You'll arrive on the morning of day 2, when we'll transfer you to your overnight hotel. If you are travelling on a regional flight, you'll arrive late in the evening of day 1, and we'll transfer you to your hotel for a two-night stay

DAY 2 Lima

You'll get to see the highlights of Lima today on a tour of the city. While its colonial past is clearly evident in its beautiful squares, fine churches, palaces and mansions, you'll also see the architectural legacy of the Incans and native Indians.

DAY 3 Paracas

Start your day with a journey by road to Paracas along the Pan American Highway, which cuts through a barren desert landscape. We'll stop at the site of the ancient Pachacamac Temple where we'll be transported back to pre-Incan times as we explore. The ruins consist ofadobe walls and pyramids and you'll also see the remains of early frescoes. Tonight we will stay in Chincha.

DAY 4 Nazca

We're taking to the water today for a fascinating cruise around the Ballestas Islands. This protected wildlife reserve provides shelter for many different species. On your cruise, keep a lookout for Humboldt penguins, sea lions and more. Later we'll travel to Nazca for an overnight stay.

DAY 5 Arequipa

Sit back, relax and take in lovely coastal views as you journey to Arequipa, our base for the next two nights.

DAY 6 Arequipa

You'll understand why Arequipa is known as the White City after today's tour. It is loomed over by ice-capped volcanoes and as you explore you'll see many buildings made from white volcanic rock. We'll also head inside the Museum of Andean Sanctuaries to see archaeological finds from the Andes, and the Santa Catalina Convent, a masterpiece of colonial architecture. You can choose to spend the afternoon just as you wish.

DAY 7 Chivay

After setting off early this morning, a scenic drives takes us to the Colca Canyon, whose steep walls are deeper than the Grand Canyon. This is one of the best places in South America to spot the Andean condor, a magnificent bird of prey, so keep your eyes skyward. We'll stay in Chivay overnight.

DAY 8 Puno

Our next base is Puno, on the shores of Lake Titicaca. We'll drive here today and on the way stop off at the remote burial site at Sillustani, where the religious rituals of the pre-Inca Colla people will be explained.

DAY 9 Puno

You're going to enjoy superb close-up views of sacred Lake Titicaca and the Uros floating islands this morning. The lake sits 12,500ft up in the Andes and covers a huge area of 3,500 miles. Spend the afternoon in Puno exploring at your own pace.

DAY 10 Cuzco

Four nights in Cuzco will give you plenty of time to explore. Your journey here is going to be a wonderful experience too as you cross the high plateau of the Andes taking in views of traditional rural life.

DAY 11 Cuzco

There's plenty to see in Cuzco, so let's head off to explore. We're going to start at a school in the Choco rural community which is supported by the Travelsphere Cares project, before heading to the Koricancha Temple. This ancient Inca palace was the centre of worship of the Sun God. In Cuzco's main square you'll step inside the cathedral, and your tour ends with a visit to the Sacsayhuamán fortress, an impressive example of Inca military architecture.

DAY 12 Machu Picchu

You've seen many of Peru's incredible sights so far on your tour, but today offers something really special. You're going to get the chance to explore the ruined 'lost city' of Machu Picchu, perched high above a steep valley and swathed in jungle. Your journey here is by narrow gauge railway, with the last part by bus. A walk with a Local Guide on the mountain top and time to go your own way will help you to uncover its splendour. You'll be able to wander through the temples and terraces and enjoy spectacular views into the lush green Urubamba Valley thousands of feet below.

DAY 13 Cuzco

If you'd like to explore Cuzco further, today is free for you to do just that. However, if you'd like to join an optional excursion, why not come with us to the Sacred Valley. First, experience the colour and tradition of Pisac's Indian market, where you can barter for rugs, alpaca-wool sweaters and other native handicrafts. After an included lunch, we'll continue to Ollantaytambo. Originally a fortress settlement, this is one of the few places where the Spanish colonists were defeated by the Incas. As you explore you'll see a town which largely follows its original Inca plan, and a number of Inca ruins can still be seen.

DAY 14 Cuzco

Today we'll transfer you to the airport for your flight to the UK via Lima and Bogotá .

DAY 15 UK via Bogotá

You'll arrive back in the UK today.

Sacred Valley of the Incas and Ollantaytambo

FROM £70

Visit Chinchero, a small picturesque Andean village. Enter the home of a textile artisan, where you will see some of his original work and learn about his techniques, as well as his creative process. Then visit its significant Inca ruins dating from the end of the 15th Century, as well as a beautiful traditional church. Afterwards, on the road to Ollantaytambo, you will stop at the Racchi viewpoint, for one of the best views of the Sacred Valley. Lunch will be served at a local restaurant. Then it is on to Ollantaytambo, one of the most representative building complexes of the Inca Empire and site of one of the Spanish Conquistadors' rare strategic defeats. Famous for its terraced fields, Ollantaytambo was a very effective fortress and also a religious center. Finally, you will stop at the village of Ollantaytambo, known as "the only living Inca town". It is the best surviving example of Inca urban planning, with stone-paved streets that have been inhabited since the 12th Century.

Epic Peru

PeruRail

PeruRail operates several trains to Aguas Calientes along the track that was originally laid in 1928.  Your journey will take you on the second highest railroad in the world, along the narrow gauge ride down the Urumbamba River venturing through the spectacular Andes mountain scenery. On route you start your magnificent scenery by viewing the spectacular Mountain Veronica peaking at 3.5 miles high just 15 minutes out of Ollantaytambo.

Moving on from the mountains you will soon vision agricultural terraces on the valley slopes, an array of alpine meadows and tropical rainforest. Your journey brings you to a town called Aguas Calientes situated in the valley below Machu Picchu. From here you will take a bus which travels 13 switch backs up the mountain to your final destination of the UNESCO World Heritage Site the Lost City of Incas.  It was brought to international attention in 1911 by Hiram Bingham. An interesting fact of Machu Picchu is that it was not meant to be named Machu Picchu as the name has been lost forever. Hiram Bingham was actually looking for another city known as Vilcabamba and was pointed in the direction of locals to a place between Machu Picchu (Old Mountain) and Huayna Pcchu (Young Mountain).

The name Machu Picchu has since stuck and is now visited by hundreds and thousands of tourists each year. Here you will then be greeted by an expert guide who will show you every nook and cranny of this remarkable site. There’s free time for you to explore the remarkable ruins and ancient architecture by yourself. With over 150 buildings present on the site every turn is sure to unveil something new and equally amazing!

The story behind Machu Picchu

Shwe Dagon Pagoda

Perched high in the Andes in a hidden location and seemingly suspended in the mists of the mountain jungle this extraordinary Inca citadel is often referred to as the ‘Lost City’.

A 600-YEAR-OLD MYSTERY

Dating back to the 15th century, it was originally thought that Machu Picchu was a political, religious and administrative centre. More recent theories have also suggested that it was a royal estate, celebrating the military conquests of a mighty Inca ruler. However, mystery still surrounds the true reason as to why this fantastic city was conceived and constructed. Although its function remains a topic of hot debate, what we do know for certain is that Machu Picchu is an engineering marvel. Thousands of labourers worked for 50 years on the wonderfully preserved citadel, and the vast Inca walls of polished stone, built without any mortar, still stand today.

20TH CENTURY REDISCOVERY

The Spanish conquistadors arrived in Peru in the early 16th century but no mention of Machu Picchu was made in their very detailed travel chronicles. It’s possible that German explorers visited the site in the 1860s but apart from this, only the local Quechua people were aware of its existence. It was the Quechuas who in 1911 guided American historian Hiram Bingham through the thick jungle to the remote and isolated ‘Lost City’. The vegetation was so dense it was only possible to map out the site at this stage. Bingham returned in 1912 and again in 1915 to complete the challenging task of clearing the thick forest. It was during this time that he also discovered more ruins along the now famous Inca Trail.

A THRILLING JOURNEY

Today, the journey to remote Machu Picchu is still an adventure. The day starts with a magical trip on the narrow gauge railway to the town of Aquas Calientes. The train travels through deep gorges cut by rushing rivers and enclosed by huge stone cliffs topped with cloud forest. A bus ride completes the experience with a steep and twisting road taking travellers high into the mist-shrouded mountains. Here, the thrilling reward is one of the world’s most astonishing and wonderful sights. A local specialist guide will bring Machu Picchu alive, describing each fascinating area and its possible purpose too.

MACHU PICCHU TOP FIVE

Splendid temples and terraces, and dizzying views of the lush green Urubamba Valley thousands of feet below - at every turn another breathtaking sight awaits. Here are some of our Machu Picchu highlights.

  • Temple of the Three Windows Look out through the huge windows, rare in Inca architecture, to the commanding vistas across the valley.
  • Central Plaza Perhaps join grazing llamas on this vast green space which marks the divide between the grand ceremonial area and the residential and industrial sectors.
  • Temple of the Sun Best viewed from above, this rounded tower may have been used for astronomical purposes by the Incas.
  • Royal Tomb View the step-like altar and sacred niches from the entrance, and speculate on their mystical ceremonial significance.
  • Intihuatana It is likely that this magnificent carved rock was used by Inca astronomers to predict solstices. Stop here for a photo and drink in more glorious views.

DID YOU KNOW?

Hiram Bingham was actually searching for another lost city, Vilcabama, the last stronghold of the Incas, when he discovered Machu Picchu.
