Battlefields of France & Flanders by Rail

This poignant 4-day tour is a fitting way to remember the fallen soldiers of the First World War during its 100th anniversary year. You’ll stand on the very battlefield where so many lives were lost and pay your own tributes at the cemeteries where thousands of war heroes are laid to rest.

What's included

  • Standard-class return rail travel by Eurostar
  • Overseas transfers and other transportation
  • 3 nights’ accommodation with breakfast, plus 1 dinner
  • The services of a Travelsphere Tour Manager
  • Hotel porterage (one bag per person).

Included holiday highlights

  • Visit the Beaumont Hamel Newfoundland Memorial Park, on the site of the Somme battlefield, and see Vimy Ridge, captured by the Canadians in 1917
  • During a full day of sightseeing visit Talbot House, the Ypres Salient, Tyne Cot Cemetery, tour Ypres, enter the In Flanders Fields Museum and pay your respects at the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate (full day)
You’ll board the Eurostar in St Pancras today to alight in Lille a mere 90 minutes later. On arrival, you’ll join the short 40 minute transfer by coach to the Belgian town of Ypres, your base for the next three nights. Your hotel is located in the heart of the town centre, close to the beautiful Market Square and the Menin Gate. This memorial bears the names of 54,389 officers and men from the United Kingdom and Commonwealth Forces who fell in the Ypres Salient before 16 August 1917 and have no known grave.

Dinner is included at your hotel this evening.
We include a full-day tour today, starting with a haunting visit to the Beaumont Hamel Newfoundland Memorial Park, on the site of the Somme battlefield. A guided tour will recount the disastrous attack of 1 July 1916, the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Named after the Royal Newfoundland Regiment, the park is a memorial to all the Newfoundlanders who fought in the First World War and the many other soldiers from other regiments who fought and died on this spot.

You’ll see the Thiepval Anglo-French Memorial, which bears the names of some 73,000 British and South African soldiers missing or who fell at the Somme. Your tour concludes at the Vimy Ridge, a vital part of the German defence system which was captured by the Canadians in April 1917.
Today our full-day included excursion begins with a visit to the town of Poperinge, and Talbot House, or TOC H as it was known in army signallers’ code, a club where British soldiers could meet and relax regardless of rank. This is followed by a visit to the infamous Ypres Salient and Tyne Cot Cemetery, the largest Commonwealth military cemetery in the world, and the resting place of 11,954 soldiers.

This afternoon you’ll return to Ypres, which was devastated during some of the worst fighting of the First World War, but is now beautifully restored. You’ll enter the In Flanders Fields Museum and have the chance to pay your respects at the Last Post Ceremony at the Menin Gate this evening.
After a morning at leisure you’ll transfer back to Lille where you’ll board the Eurostar and travel back to the UK.
