Go wild in Chile

Chile is a land of extremes, and amongst this dramatic landscape of towering mountains and barren desert lives a diverse variety of animal species.

Llama and alpaca

A third of the country’s mammals, such as the pudú, or pygmy deer, are not found anywhere else in the world, and four species of camelid are found here – the domesticated llama and alpaca in the north, and the wild guanaco and vicuña, which live in the high altitudes of Patagonia.

The latter is highly prized for its fur, which is extremely fine and, when sold, very expensive as the animal can only be shorn once every three years, therefore producing very small amounts. Once heavily hunted, their population dwindled to around 6,000 in the 1970s. Now protected, some 350,000 are thought to inhabit the alpine areas of the Andes. Keep a lookout for all these creatures as you journey through the Andes on a holiday in Chile.

Andean condor

A birdwatchers’ paradise, Chile is also renowned for its incredible range of birdlife, which comes in all shapes and sizes, from the diminutive hummingbird to the mighty Andean condor. On a Chile tour keep a lookout for this remarkable bird, which as its name suggests, is found in mountainous regions.

These birds really are huge, in fact they are among the largest in the world that are able to fly. They can weigh up to 33 pounds and have an enormous wingspan of up to 10 feet. It’s because of their size that they live in windy areas, meaning that they can glide on air currents without too much effort. Being vultures, they feed mostly on carrion, and they’re not fussy eaters – wild and domestic mammals, marine creatures such as seals and fish, and birds’ eggs and hatchlings are all on the menu.

Blue whale

The coastal waters around Chile, which stretch for miles, are also a haven for some truly impressive wildlife. The blue whale, which can reach an incredible 33 metres in length and weigh up to 180 tonnes, and several species of dolphin can be spotted if you’re really lucky.
