Uruguay - Touring Holidays
On an escorted tour to Uruguay you will discover an incredible country with a beautiful coastline which lures many a well-to-do Latin American holidaymaker. Bordered by much larger neighbours Argentina and Brazil, this diminutive country can still hold its own as a tempting getaway destination, offering an intoxicating combination of white-sand beaches, historic towns and lively nightlife.
Put a trip to Montevideo to the top of your list. Uruguay’s vibrant capital boasts a bohemian atmosphere and a charming Old City which preserves many historical sites. See the Citadel Gate, erected in 1829 to protect the city from invaders, and picturesque colonial buildings such as the Metropolitan Cathedral, the Torres Garcia Museum, showcasing the works of Joaquin Torres Garcia, and the Solis Theater, which opened in 1856.
You don’t even have to leave the capital to enjoy miles of pristine beaches. There are several here, with the seafront avenue known as the Rambla linking all of them from east to west. Pocitos Beach is the most popular amongst the locals, who flock here in the summer months to soak up the sun, play sports and spend time with friends. The city also boasts an eclectic mix of venues for night-time entertainment, from intimate tango bars to beachfront discos.
Colonia del Sacramento
The country’s oldest city, Colonia del Sacramento is another draw, and is easily accessible from Montevideo. Step back in time in its historic centre, where picturesque cobblestone streets harbour ancient houses, churches and a host of interesting museums.
If you’re after a touch of glamour, look no further than the glitzy resort of Punta del Este, where you can spend your days lazing on idyllic beaches. Come night-time take a stroll along the yacht-filled harbour before choosing from one of the many high-end restaurants. Chic nightclubs also abound, so dancing the night away is an option if you’re a night owl.
Salto hot springs
After one too many nights on the tiles, you might be in need of some rest and rejuvenation. The perfect spot is Salto, home to several hot spring resorts. Here you can bathe in warm waters whose rich minerals are said to have remarkable therapeutic benefits. The perfect end to your Uruguay holiday.
