Colombia - Touring Holidays

An escorted tour to Colombia is a great way to see the very best of this extraordinary country, which for many years was firmly off the tourist trail. Overcoming decades of civil turmoil, it is now emerging as one of South America’s hottest destinations, blessed with exquisite natural beauty and home to some of the most hospitable people you’re ever likely to meet.

Historic Bogota

Explore the vibrant capital, Bogota, which sits at 2,620 metres up in the Andes. A city of contrasts, head to its historic centre, La Candelaria, to see cobbled streets, colourful two-tone houses and its splendid cathedral. Then take in the modern highrise buildings, shopping centres and restaurants of the Zona Rosa.

Colonial Cartagena

Cartagena de Indias is your gateway to the Caribbean. Founded in 1533, it was from this important port that ships loaded with gold and silver set sail for Europe, attracting the attention of marauding pirates as they went. You’ll find some of South America’s best-preserved Spanish colonial architecture here, as well as the protective walls of the San Felipe Fortress.

Beaches and rainforest

Colombia’s Caribbean shores boast some truly beautiful beaches, with white sand, turquoise waters and swaying palms all present and correct. This is the perfect place to relax and unwind, but adventurers will want to leave the sun-loungers behind and head into the jungle. A large proportion of the southeast of the country is covered by what is perhaps the most famous rainforest in the world, the Amazon. Vast and teeming with life, it is home to an immense array of animals, from jaguars, monkeys and sloths to pink dolphins, butterflies and many species of birds.

Coffee plantations

The Valle Del Cocora is home to Colombia’s famous wax palms – these trees are the tallest in the world, soaring up to 60 metres in height, and many live for up to 100 years. Of course, the country is also renowned for its production of high-quality coffee, with lush plantations peppering the landscape. Be sure to visit a hacienda where you can see how the coffee beans are grown, harvested and turned into the stimulating brew that is drunk daily to the tune of 70 million cups in the UK alone.

Every Travelsphere holiday offers exceptional value for money. Coffee is one of the most popular drinks on the planet, and more than 400 billion cups are consumed each year. Around two-thirds of the world’s coffee is produced in Central and South America, with Colombia in the top three.
