Romania - Touring Holidays
An escorted tour of Romania will introduce you to the unforgettable highlights of this beautiful country in Eastern European.
The legacy of Romania’s communist past looms large in its capital Bucharest. Dictator Nicolae Ceausescu’s Parliament Palace is one of the city’s most famous landmarks, and with more than 1,000 rooms over 12 storeys, it is the world’s second-largest administrative building – only the Pentagon is bigger. Dig a little deeper and you’ll also discover that Bucharest harbours elegance and charm amongst its Orthodox churches and crumbling buildings, attractive parks and busy bars.
Legends of Transylvania
Journey north from Bucharest and you’ll arrive in the heart of Transylvania, where dense forests and fairy tale castles await. Explore the region’s well-preserved Saxon towns and villages and take time to visit the wonderful Bran Castle – commonly known as Dracula’s castle.
The spiritual beliefs of Romania’s people are captured in some of the country’s impressive architectural treasures. In the far north, the Painted Monasteries of Bucovina are an incredible sight. Masterpieces of Byzantine art, the exterior walls of these churches are decorated with colourful frescoes depicting images of saints and prophets and tales from the Bible. The villages of Maramures in Romania’s northwest are famous for their UNESCO-listed wooden churches - unique buildings complete with tall, narrow steeples.
Wildlife of the Danube Delta
Just before the Danube reaches the sea, it forms a large delta of canals, marshes and lakes. It’s a haven for wildlife enthusiasts, especially bird-watchers. Somewhere in the region of 3,450 animal species are thought to reside here, including about 300 different types of bird.
During your holiday in Romania you’ll want to sample some of the local food and drink. In southeast Transylvania, look out for branza de burduf in coaja de brad, a cheese preserved in small cylinders of fir tree bark, which is often served as a snack with bread, onions and tomatoes. Around the Danube Delta, be sure to try ciorbă de peste, a soup made from different types of freshwater fish, and across the country there’s plenty of Romanian wine to sample too, everything from sweet dessert varieties to rich full-bodied reds.
