Poland - Touring Holidays

Choose an escorted tour to Poland and you’ll discover a fascinating country with a long and sometimes turbulent past. Vibrant cities offer sightseeing aplenty and the lakes and forests, mountains and coast combine to create a landscape of incredible natural beauty.

The capital Warsaw

Virtually destroyed during World War Two, Warsaw has risen like a phoenix from the flames. Parts of the city have been beautifully reconstructed and now sit alongside shiny new offices, austere Communist-era apartments, green open spaces and remnants of the city’s Jewish heritage. Fascinating museums tell stories of a complex past, and a generous sprinkling of trendy restaurants and bars complete the pulsating picture.

Must-see Kraków

Magnificent Kraków is another city to add to your list of must-sees. It’s a stunningly preserved architectural marvel and the pretty, atmospheric streets are a delight to discover. Wawel Cathedral with its 18 chapels is the burial site of most of Poland’s monarchs, and in the heart of the Old Town, Rynek Glowny is Europe’s largest medieval market square. Kazimierz, the old Jewish district, is another highlight. Here the Old Synagogue dates from the 15th century and is considered Poland’s oldest Jewish place of worship.

Mighty castles

The mighty Wawel Royal Castle is one of Kraków’s premier attractions. A royal residence has stood on this site since the 11th century, but the palace you see today dates from the 16th century. Inside there’s an interesting museum and the State Rooms and Royal Private Apartments are definitely worth a visit.

If its castles you’ve come to see, UNESCO-listed Malbork is a truly unforgettable sight. Often described as the largest brick-built castle in the world, it was founded by the Teutonic Knights in 1274. You can easily spend a few hours exploring here, admiring artefacts and learning about its fascinating history.

Poland’s fight for freedom

Not far from Malbork, the port city of Gdańsk looks out over the Baltic Sea. In its historic shipyard Lech Walesa formed the famous ‘Solidarity’ movement and led protests against the Communist regime. In the city’s European Solidarity Centre, displays and artefacts offer a fascinating insight into Poland’s 20th century fight for freedom. Gdańsk is also renowned for its trade in Amber, or Baltic Gold as it is sometimes known. The beautiful orange gemstone has been found in this area for thousands of years and a tour of a workshop reveals how it is made into jewellery.

Scenic beauty

Poland's scenic beauty is as varied as it is extraordinary. Its Baltic coast boasts some excellent sandy beaches, as well as the spectacular Slowinski sand dunes. In the northeast, the Great Malsurian Lakes punctuate the landscape and the Białowieża National Park is one of Europe’s oldest nature reserves and home to the European bison. Arguably the most beautiful area of all is around the Tatra Mountains in the far south, where you will find the charming resort of Zakopane. Famous for its beautiful wooden villas, it is a superb base from which to enjoy the mountain air.

Locally sourced produce

If sampling the local food is an essential part of your holiday, you’ll have plenty to look forward to in Poland. The best dishes combine locally sourced produce like mushroom, beetroot, cabbage and pork and if deserts are your thing, you’ll be totally spoilt for choice. Cream cakes, strudel, ice cream and pancakes are all on the menu – it’ll be hard to choose your favourite!

Articles about Poland

Auschwitz - A place we must never forget

The UNESCO-listed Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum is perhaps the most harrowing memorial in Poland. It is located in Oświęcim, about 70 kilometres from Kraków, on the site of the largest former Nazi concentration camp and its continued existence ensures that the world will never forget the horrific atrocities of the Holocaust.
