Thailand - Touring Holidays
You’ll discover a truly unique country on an escorted tour to Thailand, where sacred temples and ancient landmarks are complemented perfectly by the natural beauty of their surroundings.
‘Land of smiles’
Known as the ‘land of smiles’, expect a warm welcome from the friendly Thais but there is so much more that will delight you about this land. Its capital, Bangkok, is hectic, chaotic and colourful and its diverse highlights range from the dazzling Grand Palace to some of Asia’s largest shopping malls.
There are more wats, or temples, in Thailand than you could ever hope to visit in a lifetime, let alone on one holiday. Must-sees include Bangkok’s Temple of the Emerald Buddha and Temple of the Reclining Buddha. This is one of the largest temple complexes in the city and is famous for its huge Buddha, which is covered in gold leaf and stretches to 46 metres in length.
The city is beautifully illuminated after the sun goes down, and a great way to see it is by three-wheel tuk tuk, stopping off at the various night markets as you go. This gives you a chance to sample some Thai street food, from sizzling meat skewers to stir-fried noodles, from the many vendors.
A major attraction in Thailand, Ayutthaya was the country’s capital from the 14th to 18th centuries. Located north of Bangkok, these ancient ruins are fascinating to explore, and include palaces, temples and religious monuments.
If you’re feeling adventurous, head to Chiang Mai, where dense forests, cascading waterfalls and wondrous wildlife are yours to discover. Once the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, here you can spend time with a local family who will introduce you to Lanna culture and traditions.
A further highlight of Chiang Mai is the sacred temple of Doi Suthep, accessed by a flight of 300 stairs flanked by trees and guarded by Naga (snake) figures. It sits atop the Doi Suthep Mountain and is part of Doi Suthep National Park, whose forest canopy is home to more than 300 species of bird. En route you’ll also get to see Wat Palat, a hidden gem tucked away in the jungle.
During your Thailand holiday you are sure to catch a glimpse of saffron-robed Buddhist monks performing their daily rituals and have the chance to admire the slow, graceful moves of traditional Thai dancers. Another wonderful sight is found at the Elephant Nature Park. Here these rescued creatures are cared for and rehabilitated and visitors can watch them as they bathe and play.
With over 2,000 miles of coast and 8,000 tropical islands, Thailand is also famous for its gorgeous beaches with snow-white sand and turquoise waters. Why not end your holiday soaking up the sun as you enjoy a tropical cocktail or a bottle of local Singha beer.
