RETIREMENT SHOULD BE ‘EXHILARATING’ NOT ‘CLIFF EDGE’
UK’s adventurous retirement brigade have no time to slow down says Travelsphere
Thousands of Britons are easing their way into retirement but refusing to slow down. Many are proving that life begins at 60 by taking holidays designed for the adventurous at heart.
That’s the verdict of Travelsphere – the UK’s leading escorted tour operator, who says its customers don't see retirement as a chore - instead; they embrace it as a time to indulge their life-long passions.
Feedback from Travelsphere goes against this week's report on attitudes to retirement from the Department of Works and Pensions. The report claimed that just over half the number of Britons reaching retirement found their first day without work filled them with unhappiness.
The report recommended that people nearing retirement should avoid a 'cliff-edge' situation and ease themselves into it gradually.
"Our customers, who are typically 50+, are extremely adventurous and view retirement as the next chapter,” says Pat Tempest, Head of Brand at Travelsphere. “They've worked hard all their lives and are eager to reward themselves with that trip of a lifetime, or perhaps several small breaks throughout the year. We are seeing our older customers becoming more adventurous and discerning with their travel exploits.”
When Travelsphere began offering holidays some 30 years ago, it was taking customers by coach to Colwyn Bay, Jersey, Austria and Holland to see the bulb fields. Today, they are demanding excitement further afield in diverse and exciting destinations such as China, Madagascar, Libya and Costa Rica.
The biggest trend over the last 10 years has been for holidays of a longer duration. A massive 58% of customers are choosing to extend their stay in a country or add-on an additional destination to their itinerary. For example: A 15-day tour of Peru & Bolivia from £2099, also comes with the option to spend two nights in the Amazon Rainforest from just £499. They can also tag on a memorable seven night trip to experience the awesome Galapagos Islands from £1429.
"With the world becoming more accessible, our customers know they are unlikely to return to a previous destination. The extended stay and add on options ensure they make the absolute most out of their holiday time away." says Tempest.
