DAY 1: UK/Izmir
Depart on your scheduled flight to Izmir. On arrival transfer to your hotel in Izmir for an overnight stay.
DAY 2: Izmir & Pergamon
Enjoy a short city tour of Izmir, before heading to Bergama and the ancient city of Pergamon, for a walking tour of the Acropolis (approx. 2 hours’ walk). Drive to Bergama with free time for lunch. We then walk to the Asclepeion, an ancient healing centre (approx. 1 hour walk). Continue to Kusadasi for a three night stay.
DAY 3: Ephesus
Today’s excursion takes us to the most famous of Turkey’s ancient sites – Ephesus. Enjoy a walking tour visiting the Basilica of St. Jean, the Isa Bey Mosque and the Museum of Ephesus before driving to the House of the Virgin Mary (approx. 5 hours’ walk).
DAY 4: Herakleia, Didyma & Milet
Travel to the Bafa Lake, crossing to the ancient city of Herakleia by boat for a walking tour through the ruins (approx. 2 hours’ walk) then continue to Didyma, one of the most famous oracles in the region. Visit the former harbour city of Milet, which now lies inland. We will spend time walking around the impressive ruins to be found here (approx. 1 hour walk).
DAY 5: Aphrodisias
We drive to Aphrodisias, one of the most important archaeological sites in Turkey for a two-hour walking tour. We then travel to Pamukkale, where overnight accommodation has been arranged. This afternoon, we visit the Greco-Roman city of Heirapolis, where we will see spectacular ruins. We then walk to the lovely village of Karahayit (approx. 2 hours’ walk).
DAY 6: Tavas & Kas
Our walk this morning boasts spectacular views of the surrounding area. After the walk, we drive to Tavas for a demonstration of carpet making. We then journey through the Taurus Mountains to the bay of Kas, which was originally the ancient city of Antiphellus. Continue to Kalkan for a two night stay.
DAY 7: Xanthus & Patara
Start the day with a drive to the ancient city of Xanthus, then on to Patara, famous as both the birthplace of St. Nicholas, and as the home to a famous oracle to Apollo. Walk through the ruins to the beach before returning to your hotel in Kalkan. (approx. 1½ hours’ walk).
DAY 8: Lycian Road, Myra & Olympos
Walk along the ancient Lycian Road this morning, en route to Demre, the ancient city of Myra, with its church of St. Nicholas and superb necropolis. We then drive via Finike along the coast to Olympos, where we have a 2½ hours’ walk in the surrounding area. We continue to Antalya for a three night stay.
DAY 9: Termessos
Located on a natural plateau, Termessos is famous as the only city Alexander the Great never conquered. Our walking tour takes us through the ruins to the Necropolis (approx. 3 hours’ walk). During the afternoon, enjoy a walking tour of Antalya’s old city.
DAY 10: Perge, Aspendos & Side
At leisure or join our full day optional excursion to the ancient Pamphylian cities of Perge, Aspendos and Side.
DAY 11: Antalya/UK
Transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.
