Mekong cruises
Mekong river cruises are the perfect way to see the vibrant colours of everyday life in South-east Asia - the floating markets, fishing boats, jungle scenery and the many exotic species living in and around its chocolate-brown waters.
The river begins its life on the Tibetan Plateau before rolling through China and along the Burma-Laos border. In Laos it passes Luang Prabang, a tranquil town of bicycle and golden temples, where orange-robed monks keep cool under parasols.
The Mekong then forms a natural boundary with Thailand before entering Cambodia, drawing close to the capital, Phnom Penh. The astonishing temples of Angkor Wat are within reach and definitely worth an excursion.
The 2,700-mile journey comes to an end in Vietnams Mekong Delta, emptying into the South China Sea. The delta is sometimes called 'the rice bowl of Vietnam' thanks to its intensive production of Asia's staple food.
