The Kremlin - A tour of the grounds of the Kremlin territory and a visit to the Cathedral of the Assumption.

Lenin’s Mausoleum - Designed by Alexei Shchusev in 1924, Lenin’s mausoleum is a masterpiece of modern architecture, comprising a pyramid of cubes faced with red granite symbolising Communism and black labradorite for mourning. Since Khrushchev denounced Stalin and removed his body from the tomb in 1956, Lenin’s preserved cadavre in his crystal casket has been displayed in solitary splendour under carefully controlled conditions inside the mausoleum.

Accommodation

You will stay for four nights on a half board basis in good three or four standard tourist class hotels throughout. All bedrooms feature private facilities, TV and telephone.

Itinerary

DAY 1
Depart on your scheduled flight to St. Petersburg. On arrival transfer to your hotel for a three night stay.

DAY 2
St. Petersburg, formerly Leningrad, was the capital of Russia until the October Revolution in 1917. Today it is a city of beautiful baroque palaces, elaborate cathedrals and picturesque canals. It is also home to one of the world’s greatest art collections, the Hermitage. Enjoy our included St. Petersburg panoramic city tour, where you will view such stunning buildings as the Hermitage, the Admiralty and St. Isaac’s Cathedral.

DAY 3
Optional excursions and additional activities are available.

DAY 4
Enjoy the optional excursions and activities on offer. After dinner you will board the overnight train to Moscow. Sleeping accommodation is provided in four berth compartments (2 berth compartments available at an extra charge – please see dates and prices) and your Tour Manager and a Russian guide will travel with you.

DAY 5
The city of Moscow was founded in 1147 as a wooden fortress, which developed into the Kremlin as it is known today. Over the years Moscow has grown into a city of immense contrasts – on the one hand a city with many great historical buildings, on the other a vibrant modern city of over 8 million people. On arrival in Moscow transfer to your hotel for breakfast, three nights’ accommodation in the hotel has been arranged. After breakfast, enjoy our included Moscow city tour, featuring the major sights such as the Kremlin, Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral and the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour. Choose from a selection of optional excursions and additional activities to see the best of the city.

DAYS 6 & 7
Optional excursions and additional activities are available.

DAY 8
Depart Moscow by coach and travel eastwards to Yaroslavl for a two night stay. En route we visit Sergiev Posad and Rostov Veliky, one of the oldest towns in Russia.

DAY 9
Today we include a panoramic tour of Yaroslavl and an excursion to Kostroma, an ancient city located on the banks of the River Volga. Dinner will be in the hotel this evening.

DAY 10
We head today to Suzdal for a two night stay, stopping on the way in Rostov, one of the oldest towns in Russia.

DAY 11
Our included tour of Suzdal takes you to the town’s Kremlin (citadel) and 18th century Cross Hall. In the afternoon we include a visit to nearby Vladimir to see the Assumption Cathedral, the Cathedral of St. Dmitriy and the famous Church of the Intercession on the River Nerl.

DAY 12
Transfer to Moscow Airport for your return flight to the UK.
