- From Moscow: Lenin’s Mausoleum
Designed by Alexei Shchusev in 1924, Lenin’s mausoleum is a masterpiece of modern architecture, comprising a pyramid of cubes faced with red granite symbolising Communism and black labradorite for mourning. Since Khrushchev denounced Stalin and removed his body from the tomb in 1956, Lenin’s preserved cadavre in his crystal casket has been displayed in solitary splendour under carefully controlled conditions inside the mausoleum.
