Itinerary

Day 1: UK/Boston

Depart on your scheduled flight to Boston, in Massachusetts, the natural starting point for any tour of New England. Three nights’ accommodation has been arranged in downtown Boston.

Day 2: Boston

Today we explore Boston – the principal city of New England to begin your tour.

So much of Boston’s revolutionary past has been preserved. The narrow, winding streets and squares of the old quarter provide an abrupt and delightful contrast with the city’s modern skyscrapers and bustling cosmopolitan lifestyle. Boston also boasts perhaps the finest seafood in the world.

On our included morning sightseeing tour you will follow parts of the famous Freedom Trail and the Granary Burial Ground. You will also visit the harbour (site of the ‘Boston Tea Party’), Beacon Hill, Quincy Market and Cambridge, home of Harvard University. Afternoon free to enjoy this wonderful city before returning to your hotel.

Day 3: Boston

An exciting full-day optional tour to beautiful Cape Cod. You will also visit Plymouth, where America’s founding fathers first set foot in the New World.

Day 4: New Hampshire

Morning departure for the drive into New Hampshire. The countryside is reminiscent of parts of Britain, but on a much grander scale, with thousands of square miles of forest ready to burst into multi-coloured splendour every autumn. Overnight stop in North Conway.

Day 5: New England

A leisurely day amidst New England’s glorious countryside. Drive through the White Mountains and Franconia Notch State Park into Vermont. A short visit will be made to Montpelier, the smallest state capital in the USA, before continuing to Stowe for an overnight stop.

Day 6: Vermont

Drive northwards through the gentle Vermont countryside to the Canadian border and on to Montreal. The magnificent bilingual city of Montreal occupies an island at the junction of the St. Lawrence and Ottawa rivers. Although hundreds of miles from the sea, it is a major port and Canada’s second city. Montreal boasts a wealth of historic sites amidst its cobbled streets, 17th century buildings, beautiful gardens and parks. There are many fine restaurants, and French influence is still evident in the open-air cafés and street markets. During the afternoon we have included a sightseeing tour of the city. We have arranged three nights’ accommodation in Montreal.

Day 7: Quebec

Today we have included a full-day excursion to Quebec City with a sightseeing tour of the old city. Quebec City is the bastion of French influence and culture in Canada. It is the only walled city in North America and stands proudly on the mighty St. Lawrence River. It is a city of winding cobbled streets, ancient churches, Norman-style houses, stone buildings, public squares and horsedrawn calèches. Famous sights include the Cathedral, Château Frontenac, the Basilica, the Citadel, and Plains of Abraham, scene of the decisive battle in 1759 between the French and the English for the control of Canada.

Day 8: Montreal

Free to explore Montreal. Alternatively join an optional excursion to the breathtaking Laurentian Mountains.

Day 9: Ottawa

Depart Montreal and drive to Ottawa to see Canada’s capital city. Ottawa is an elegant city situated on the Rideau Canal, its main attractions being the Parliament Buildings and the grand Chateau Laurier hotel. Continue to the exciting city of Toronto for an overnight stop. Toronto is Canada’s largest city and its commercial and cultural centre, dominated by the 1,815ft high CN Tower, the world’s tallest free-standing structure. Toronto boasts a vibrant nightlife, with world-class theatre, ballet and opera, and every style of restaurant.

Day 10: Rochester

After a short sightseeing tour of Toronto, you will continue to the mighty Niagara Falls, one of the greatest sights in the New World. Situated some 80 miles south-east of Toronto, the Falls are divided into two parts – the Canadian and American Falls. The Canadian Falls are the larger, 180ft high with a crest of 2,200ft, forming a curve known as Horseshoe Falls. For the most dramatic close-up view, you can don special waterproofs and ride the boat ‘Maid of the Mist’ close to the thundering waters (operates mid-May to mid-October). This afternoon you will return to the USA by entering New York State also famous for its wonderful autumn colours. Overnight stay in Rochester.

Day 11: New York

Today we drive into New York itself. Accommodation for two nights in Manhattan has been arranged, very close to the Empire State Building. New York is irresistible – a truly 24-hour city! You can also take a cruise around Manhattan, see Harlem, visit the Statue of Liberty, or even enjoy a helicopter ride over the famous skyline. Stroll down Fifth Avenue and admire the shops, or take a Hansom cab ride in Central Park. For your evening entertainment, there are the many smash hit Broadway shows to choose from and, of course, New York is renowned for its fantastic variety of restaurants.

Day 12: New York

Morning sightseeing tour of New York city. Our included tour will take you from Broadway, Times Square and the Empire State Building to Greenwich Village, then Chinatown, the Bowery and Wall Street. Rest of the day free. Optional excursions will be available.

Day 13: New York

Free in New York until your late afternoon transfer to the airport for your return flight to the UK.

Day 14: UK
