Costa Rica holidays
Costa Rica is a lush country teeming with wildlife and boasting a very colourful culture. This narrow Central American country offers two very different coastal lifestyles: the Atlantic coast features idyllic white and black-sand beaches, perfect for a relaxing break, while the Pacific coast is more popular with tourists and surfers – great if you’re looking for an action-packed holiday in Costa Rica. If the opportunity arises, be sure to call in at a coffee farm. It’s fascinating to learn all about the process and it’s an important part of Costa Rican culture.
On your Costa Rica holiday you will find that the country is peppered with reserves and parks, which exist to protect the native wildlife of the country and allow the ecological systems to thrive. Tortuguero National Park is considered one of the country’s most important sites. Leatherback and hawksbill turtles nest here between June and September, and other animals that call the park home include monkeys, sloths, insects, birds and a huge range of reptiles including caiman alligators and crocodiles.
Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve was set up in the 1950s by American Quakers searching for peace. Today the forests are home to more than 400 species of birds and 100 species of mammal, including the very vocal howler monkey and the quetzal, Costa Rica’s national bird.
Carara National Park is a major centre for ecological research and one of the country’s best areas for birdwatching. Among the many species that call the park home is the beautiful scarlet macaw. In this area it is also possible to venture to the tropical mangroves, where a cruise along the Tarcoles river offers the chance to see iguanas, bird life and crocodiles in their natural habitat.
Continue your wildlife explorations as you tour Costa Rica at Manuel Antonio National Park, on Costa Rica’s Pacific coast. This tranquil reserve is home to monkeys, toucans and many other wonderful creatures.
City life in Costa Rica is something you must experience. San José, Costa Rica’s vibrant capital, is set in the centre of a ring of mountain peaks. The spectacular location makes the city feel particularly special and sights to see during holidays in Costa Rica include the National Theatre and Gold Museum in San José.
